Northern Woodsmen LLC is a forestry, logging, sawmilling, and wood-processing tool and equipment supplier based in Burlington, Wisconsin. We help landowners, forestry professionals, firewood producers, sawmill operators, pallet businesses, and wood-product manufacturers choose practical equipment for the work they do.
Our product range supports customers throughout the forestry and wood-products supply chain, from managing and extracting timber to producing firewood, milling lumber, manufacturing finished products, and returning land to productive use through reforestation.
We do more than list machinery and tools online. We take the time to understand what a customer is processing, how much they need to produce, what equipment or facilities they already have, and where their operation is heading. That allows us to recommend equipment that fits the customer’s workload, budget, and future plans.
From individual tools to commercial wood-processing machinery, our purpose remains the same:
Solid tools. Solid advice. Solid solutions.

Specialized Equipment for Forestry and Wood-Product Businesses
Forestry and wood-product businesses rarely need equipment for just one isolated task. A growing operation may need to extract logs, process lower-value wood, package firewood, mill lumber, handle material, and increase production without immediately investing in a fully automated system.
Northern Woodsmen brings these connected requirements together through a specialized range of equipment, tools, supplies, and replacement parts.
Our principal product areas include:
Forestry, Logging, and Material Handling
We supply practical tools and machinery for felling, moving, lifting, and handling logs in woodlots, forests, farms and sawmill yards. Our range includes capstan winches, tractor cranes, forwarding equipment, cant hooks, peaveys, hookaroons, logging chains, rigging equipment, axes, wedges and chainsaw accessories.
Firewood Production and Packaging
We help everyone from landowners processing their own heating fuel to commercial firewood businesses looking to increase output and package products more efficiently. Our range includes branch loggers, firewood-processing machinery, mesh firewood bags, bulk bags, kindling bags, and associated handling equipment.
Sawmilling and Lumber Processing
Northern Woodsmen supplies equipment for turning logs into usable and saleable lumber. This includes portable sawmills, sawmill accessories, replacement parts, bandsaw blades, moisture meters, and end sealers. We can help customers compare equipment based on log size, expected output, available space, power requirements, and the type of lumber they intend to produce.
Pallet and Wood-Product Manufacturing
We work with small and medium-sized manufacturers that need to improve accuracy, reduce manual handling or increase production without purchasing equipment that is unnecessarily complex for their operation.
Our manufacturing range includes pallet assembly equipment, industrial nailers, resaws, planers, sanders, straight-line rip saws, table saws and upcut saws. These machines support pallet manufacturers and recyclers, cabinet shops, furniture makers, lumber producers, and businesses bringing pallet or crating work in-house.
Land Management and Reforestation
Our equipment also supports vegetation management, site preparation and the productive use of rural land. The range includes flail mowers, forestry mulchers, tillers, disc chippers, and reforestation supplies for landowners, farms, nurseries, Christmas tree growers, and forestry operations.
How Northern Woodsmen Started
Northern Woodsmen LLC was founded in 2016 by Mike Simonsen, an avid woodhound, woodworker, and tool collector as a side hustle after attempting to get a good deal on an ABS firewood conveyor prior to thier aquistion of Timberwolf. Instead of buying that one conveyor, he bought several pieces of equipment with the goal of selling off the extras. He never actually put that conveyor to work, selling it instead.
After Mike realized he had no easy way to load and unload 24' - 40' conveyors onto trailers by himself, he looked for a gas powered capstan winch similar to an electric version he was familiar with in his original career as a union electrician. This led to importing Portable Winch's line of forestry and hunting capstan winches well before distribution in the US was common.
Later that same Fall, he removed a very large sugar maple and cherry tree for a co-worker, cutting them up for firewood and to clear the worksite as fast as possible, but regretting such nice material was not put to better use. This soon led to adding Timbery Sawmills (manufactured by Wood-Mizer) to the lineup after declaring, " I am never again cutting up such nice trees for firewood".
It soon became clear this startup could not continue as a one-person operation working out of an oversized garage, leading to aquisition of our current location in the Burlington Industrial Park and buildup of our workforce. This allowed for further expansion and diversification including in to commercial and industrial packaging for an extremely diverse range of customers ranging from individual firewood producers, small businesses, farms, and other various industrial sectors.
Northern Woodsmen initially focused on firewood equipment with early expansion based on Mike's immediate interests, and continues today based on better serving the needs of our diverse customers to include firewood production, sawmilling, lumber processing, wood-product manufacturing, agricultural equipment, and reforestation.
Currently, we have sales, marketing, assembly, shipping, receiving, purchasing, and accounting roles with employees cross-trained for various functions plus ERP integration with demand forcasting and advanced inventory management for the purpose of supporting our customer base.
Today, Northern Woodsmen works to serve both individual and commercial customers of all sizes, but our original focus on practical equipment and informed advice based on hands on experience remains central to the business.
